The Scene Around: ONE Championship Open Workout

10/06/2016 06:27:06 PM

Things are going well here at the mixed martial arts scene here in the country. Just when one thought the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) will stage their Fight Night Manila tour again here in barely a week time, the Asia's biggest mixed martial arts firm just had their open workout here at the Music Hall of the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City.

ONE Championship, the biggest sports media company just held their open workout at the venue, and fans were watching them from ground floor to up there, all that despite the gloomy weather of Tuesday afternoon, 27 September 2016.

Gretchen Ho hosted the event organized by ONE Championship and by ABS-CBN Sports and Action.

Present at the open workout were the Filipino fighters from Team Lakay MMA: Joshua Pacio, Eduard Folanyang and Mark “Mugen” Streigl. And also, the main attraction of them all were Brandon “The Truth” Vera and MMA legend and currently ONE FC Vice President Rich “Ace” Franklin.

From the basics of ground-and-pound strikes to the submission skills with a bit of self-defense moves, fans were in for a treat of an MMA 101 class.

And to cap everything about the open workout, ONE FC Vice President has announced that Vera, the current ONE Heavyweight Champion will be defending his title at the upcoming show in Manila by December. The opponent has yet to be announced.

While in the other news, Pacio will be squaring off with Yoshitaka Naito for the Strawweight Title on October 7 in Myanmar, and Folayang will be clashing with the title-holder Shinya Aoki for the Lightweight Championship on November 11 in Singapore.

So there might be a sort of Philippine domination at the world of MMA, eh? Talk about a possibility of having three Filipino MMA champions at the end on the year. That being said, we definitely have a future for this sport, especially when Vera and Mark Munoz as two of its legendary athletes.

I guess, all we need is the support from facility to introducing different styles of wrestling, boxing, kick boxing and other forms of martial arts, as lamented by Vera himself.

And of course, the moral love from the sports fans.

P.S. Saying thank you to The Fanboy SEO for tipping me this event. Covered this one during the day itself in behalf of him.
