The Rundown Slam: WWE Battleground 2017

08/28/2017 09:43:55 PM

SmackDown Live has the last hurrah to keep up with RAW in terms of delivering PPV matches before SummerSlam with WWE Battleground, and the outcome looks like ruined by the ruins instead of seeing the soldiers survive the war with either fists raised up or a flag soaring up high.

The Smackdown tag team match has been not just a great way to kickoff the program, but was also the standout match of the evening. Seeing The New Day win them all against the Usos may have just turned up the leaf into the pages of their feuds, But let's hope that some other guys in the tag team division get their shit together to alleviate the division. Unless they copy RAW's playbook.

And frankly, Shinsuke Nakamura and Baron Corbin went flat, somehow made me questioning Nakamura's progress as a singles performer who made it big after stepping on a SmackDown live ring? And that goes to Corbin's status as a potential top heel (something trhat eventually went downwards before SummerSlam). And this feud ended up with less supposedly-grandeur.

Battleground saw Natalya's emergence. I'll say it's a long overdue for some veteran like her who used to be a superb performer regardless of her character as a heel. I just felt bad that Tamina got deprived again.

The flag match went nothing awry, from start to finish (where are the god damn place if they were supposed to be at their respective pedestals before the match?). Is this what we got from a John Cena return? I mean, a refreshing crash course that end up Cena burying a talent once again after two years. And hey, why you American booing your (supposedly) hero in this US vs. foreigner match? Wish Jack Swagger was in his shoes right now.

And while the main event proved how Jinder Mahal's reign could be expandable as planned, seeing the Great Khali was seemingly special, but would probably end up being just another one-night-stand (albeit sexuality means). The Punjabi Prison was supposedly a very brutal match, right? But we haven't seen much of them during this outing. Sad. Save for that Samir Singh's fall to the announce table, this match was been nothing but a bummer.

Overall, Battleground has shown another reason on why SmackDown's quality of booking PPV matches and feuds has been falling wayward as of late – or rather, since WrestleMania.

The Verdict: 7.0
