Playback: Maroon 5 – Sugar (music video)

1/17/2015 11:38:55 AM

I’ve been a fan of Maroon 5 since they successfully penetrated the mainstream music scene in 2002 with some of their chart-topping hits from their album Songs About Jane then. They also had tunes which rocked my world on their other records like their 2007 It Won’t Be Soon Before Long.

Though I admit on the recent years, when Adam Levine and company were making more funkier pop tracks than the rock-ish ones, they don’t sound well for me. Maybe, I’m more in favor of their alternative rock side than what the mainstream culture offers us right now.

On the flip side though, as their listener, their music have to evolve, which is actually good for both business and art aspects. I remember the album version of Makes Me Wonder sounds better than its concert counterpart. The funky vibe jived well with the rock tune, plus the melodramatic lyrics found underneath that upbeat tune.

Moving on, I am seeing almost the same thing with Sugar, their latest single off their latest album V which by the way was released a few days ago (January 13 to be exact). It’s their third after Maps and Animals.

In fact, the 3:55-length song became part of the entertainment circulation when its music video allegedly features them being the “wedding crashers,” as inspired from that 2005 romcom flick.

Some news outlets — from those all-entertainment based like the Rolling Stones and Billboard to the big firms like CNN — claimed there are scenes where the band really crashed weddings. Though a Cosmopolitan article had stated a different angle and take on that matter.

And apparently, the news made it to the top world trending list on Twitter yesterday.

The music video premiered just a day after the single was formally released. And by the way, the Sugar music video will be shown at the television sets on the United States 9 A.M. ET via VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown.

Six people actually wrote the track, including Levine himself and another popular American musician named Mike Posner.

Wikipedia was right when it stated Sugar was a mixture of sync-driven nostalgic disco funk. Sounds like 80s, in fact. It actually reminds me of some upbeat tracks made by artists like Bruno Mars and Katy Perry in the recent years.

Going back to the video though, as much as I don’t personally liked weddings, well… whether the concept was made real or fake; I have to admire how things went on for Sugar. Not because I’m a fan of M5, but knowing for a fact that such concepts are a piece of rarity in the current music scene.

Well, why not giving them another listening try?

  1. Ito pala 'yung link na nakita ko dati, pero hindi ko kinlik, 'yung 'When this couple found out about their wedding crashers...' Isang malaknig surpresa nga ito para sa isang ikakasal, bagama't gaya mo e hindi ako fan ng kasal (civil kami ng misis ko). Medyo me pagka-80s nga ang tunog at magandang pakinggan.
