Flick Review: Mga Rebeldeng May Kaso

11/19/2015 5:48:25 PM

It’s been a while since the last time I watched a movie. And just a bit long while, I managed to take a peek on one of the entries for Cinema One Originals called Mga Rebeldeng May Kaso.

Talk about the age of rebellion during the 80s where most Filipinos were revolting against the society: first, against the regime of the-President Ferdinand Marcos; and the next thing, about the independent or underground scene in the country. So it’s not just the typical people you have seen in the decade, but the then-youngsters who dared to be different among the rest; just like the “punk” kids of the 90s and 2000s.

The film lasted for about 75 minutes. It’s kinda impressive to notice director Raymond Red’s style actually used one of the popular film materials in making this one; quite different among the modern style where one would go the ‘point-and-shoot’ way.

Perhaps experiences coming from the elders Red and actor Epy Quizon at least helped the rest of the case in doing their role portrayals. Also, since reminiscing-the-90s is already “so mainstream,” it’s about time we should take a look a little bit backward to the decade where Philippine independent cinema was barely on its baby-stage.

Talk about paying homage on how it was done. And to say the least, the alternative culture already exists since then; it just so happened that numbers may have been changing but the way of life still remains the same. Unless your environment thinks punk is still a taboo.

By the way, I’m giving my shoutout to 8 Moons of Jupiter. Thanks to Bren Pasamba for the tickets and Imee Malabonga for tipping me. I swear: the long coast-crossing trip from Quezon City to Bicutan and to Resorts World was totally worth it.
