Curtain Call: M Butterfly

09/29/2018 09:42:39 AM

It was another time for another run in Manila for one of the most resounding names in theater's running history as M Butterfly hit the stages of Maybank Performing Arts Theater in Bonifacio Global City. Inspired by Giaccomo Puccini's opera, the two-act play is loosely based on events surrounding a 1986 espionage trial about a my serious Chinese opera singer and a French Diplomat.

And it's no secret why this was once hailed for the accolades and controversies. The cast's portrayal of the – especially  RS Francisco as its lead character which serves as the epitome of a “madame butterfly” – has been nothing but superb. But make no mistake about this, too: Mayen Estanero, Olivier Borten, Lee O'Brien, Norman McLeod, Maya Encila, Rica Nepomuceno, and Ms. Pinky Amador provided a stellar job in making their characters presence strongly felt as respective foils to Song Liling --  specifically, O'Brien for taking narration into another leaf in the most convincing manner.

The play didn't even feel dragging despite running for nearly three hours, with the first act spanning for around 75 minutes. It could even be a perfect way to kill some time instead of getting stuck in the horrendous traffic grind inside this district.

Safe to say defiance has paid its price for over the course of time; a thought-provoking story of lust-driven romance, cultural and diplomatic affairs, and debunking taboos has seen them all like a premonition to today's standing where LGBT is finally accepted in most parts of society; proving that love wins every single time.
