Flick ReView: Death To 2020

01/06/2021 02:24:01 AM

For most of us, 2020 has been way beyond a typical bad year. Not only we experienced our own share of personal mishaps, but the world underwent a series of sudden, drastic changes. The coronavirus has paralyzed almost everything and re-introduced lockdown to civilizations across the globe.

Not only that, we have mourned over legendary personalities – both old and young – such as Kobe Bryant, Sean Connery, Pat Patterson, and Kenny Rogers, to name a few. There was also notable disaster such as wildfires, volcano eruptions, flashfloods brought by tropical cyclones, and even earthquakes; as well as a political clash that might've triggered another world war. To sum it up, the events that happened in 2020 were like a collection of teasers to what could have been an apocalyptic-like era.

All that said, as Yuletide season passed upon us, we have high hopes that 2021 would be different from this nightmare. That said, Netflix created a comedy event that brought together some of the most noticeable news items and iconic actors to mirror 2020 to its core.

Death To 2020 was a decent eulogy and a trainwreck in its own right. It showcased an impressive cast of characters such as Hugh Grant, Lisa Kudrow, Leslie Jones, Cristin Milloti, and Lawrence Fishburne as its narrator.

Some of the personalities were the highlights, while some punchlines – though appear to blurt with name-calling, anger, and reality – were on-point. But of course, Death To 2020 had its shares of disappointments, from segments, limited exposures of select actors, and some flip-flops that lessen the impact of the film's humor.

Death to 2020 could be your saving grace if you suspend your disbelief for almost 71 minutes and let the fiasco and many faces and angles brought by this mockumentary take its course. Well, that's a big IF, though.  Some dark comedies are quite hard to be effective if it lacks enough creativity and absurdness, something that this film had a problem. It's like when they were damn serious from the start only to get you thrown in the bus in such an erratic manner.

Besides, I'm glad the irritating phrase 'new normal' wasn't heard in any kind of way. Though a part of me wished that Samuel Jackson blurted 'motherfucker' in his seat.

Nevertheless, Death to 2020 is a must-see during the turn of the past year, and for only like 1 or 2 times since then. It is safe to say that it was a silly ending in a very 'silly' year (in a horrible way).

The Verdict: 7/10

Death To 2020 is a Britain-based Netflix original comedy event created by writer-producer Charlie Brooker and fellow Black Mirror creator Annabel Jones. Starring Samuel L. Jackson, Hugh Grant, Lisa Kudrow, Leslie Jones, Joe Keery, Kumail Nanjiani, Tracey Ullman, Cristin Milioti, Diane Morgan, Samson Kayo, and Lawrence Fishburne as narrator. Directed by Al Campbell and Alice Mathias.
